How Technology Changed the Equation

The modern business environment has altered that arrangement.

Over the past two decades, organisations have enthusiastically adopted technologies that increased speed, flexibility and efficiency. Cloud computing, mobile devices, remote work platforms, software integrations and artificial intelligence have fundamentally transformed how information moves through organisations.

Few would argue these developments have not been beneficial. Productivity gains have been substantial. Geographic limitations have largely disappeared. Small organisations can now access capabilities that would have been unattainable only a generation ago.

However, every technological advance carries secondary consequences that often become visible only after widespread adoption.

One of those consequences appears to be a gradual transition from assumed trust to verified trust.

The evidence for this shift emerges in unexpected places.

Procurement processes that once focused primarily on capability now frequently include cybersecurity questionnaires and supplier assurance requirements. Professional service firms face increasing scrutiny regarding data handling practices. Regulatory frameworks surrounding privacy, governance and information security continue to expand.

Research from KPMG found that 94 per cent of procurement managers consider cybersecurity standards important when awarding work to an SME supplier, and 86 per cent would consider removing a supplier following a breach. (KPMG, Small Business Reputation & The Cyber Risk, 2016)

These developments are often discussed independently.

Yet they may all represent manifestations of the same underlying trend.

Trust is becoming something that organisations are expected to demonstrate rather than merely claim.

When Reputation Becomes Insufficient

Historically, a business's reputation often functioned as sufficient evidence of trustworthiness. A long operating history, personal relationships and professional credentials provided confidence.

While these factors remain important, they are increasingly supplemented by questions regarding systems, controls and governance.

Can information be accessed only by authorised individuals?

Can access be revoked when circumstances change?

Can sensitive information be traced, monitored and protected?

Can risks be identified before they become incidents?

These questions are not fundamentally technical.

They are questions about trust.

Technology merely provides the mechanisms through which answers are expressed.

The Quietest Transformation

This distinction may become increasingly important as artificial intelligence accelerates the democratisation of capability. The tools that once differentiated organisations are becoming widely available. Expertise remains valuable, but access to sophisticated technology is no longer restricted to large enterprises.

As capability becomes easier to acquire, other forms of differentiation naturally become more valuable.

Trust may be one of them.

The organisations that succeed over the coming decade may not necessarily be those with the most advanced technologies or the largest budgets. They may be the organisations that are able to demonstrate responsible stewardship of information, transparent governance and trustworthy operational practices.

If that proves correct, then the most significant business transformation currently underway may not be technological at all.

It may be the quiet evolution of trust itself.
